Designing Backyard Landscape Lighting Around a Koi Pond in Bentonville, Arkansas
When a backyard already has strong natural features, the goal of landscape lighting isn’t to overpower them. It’s to bring out what’s already there. That was exactly the approach we took on this recent backyard lighting project in Bentonville, Arkansas.
The focal point of the space was a koi pond made up of three separate pools, each connected by its own waterfall. The challenge wasn’t visibility. it was balance. Each section needed to stand on its own while still feeling like part of a cohesive design.
Designing Lighting Around Water Features
Water behaves very differently at night than it does during the day. Reflections, movement, and shadow all become more noticeable once lighting is introduced.
Instead of washing the pond with light, we focused on:
- Highlighting each individual waterfall
- Defining the edges of each pool
- Preserving a calm, natural atmosphere
This approach allows the eye to move naturally through the space, rather than being pulled toward a single bright spot.
Subtle Path Lighting Along the Koi Pond Walkway
The walkway running alongside the pond needed enough light for safe movement without distracting from the water itself.
We used low-level path lights, positioned carefully to:
- Provide gentle guidance along the path
- Add a soft glow near the pond’s edge
- Avoid glare or harsh reflections on the water
By keeping the light subtle and evenly spaced, the walkway feels intentional without competing with the pond.
Moonlighting from a Silver Birch Tree
One of the defining elements of this project was a mature silver birch tree located near the lowest pool of the koi pond.
Rather than lighting it from below, we installed downlighting within the canopy, allowing light to filter naturally down into the pond. This created a true moonlighting effect, where the light feels ambient rather than artificial.
The result was:
- Soft illumination on the water’s surface
- Natural movement as the leaves shift
- A calming, organic feel that changes throughout the evening
Moonlighting is especially effective around water features because it adds visibility without flattening the space.
Uplighting Trees for Depth and Reflection
To give the backyard a sense of scale, we added uplighting to the trees surrounding the pond.
This served two important purposes:
1. It created vertical depth, making the yard feel larger at night.
2. It allowed the trees to reflect naturally on the surface of the water.
Those reflections are what truly elevate the space. When the water is calm, the pond mirrors the surrounding trees, creating a layered, almost resort-like atmosphere.
Creating a Backyard That Feels Like a Retreat
This project wasn’t about brightness or dramatic effects. It was about intentional lighting design.
Each technique, path lighting, moonlighting, and uplighting, was chosen to support the others. The waterfalls remain the focal point, the pond feels calm and inviting, and the surrounding landscape adds depth instead of distraction.
For homeowners in Bentonville, professionally designed landscape lighting can completely change how a backyard is used after dark. Features that fade away at night suddenly become places you want to spend time.
This is the difference between simply installing lights and designing an outdoor lighting system that feels natural, balanced, and timeless.
